Laxity is one of those changes that arrives quietly. Nothing happens on a particular day. You just notice at some point that the jawline is less defined than it was, that the skin on the neck creases differently, or that the cheeks sit a little lower in photographs.
This guide explains what is actually happening in the skin, which treatments genuinely improve it, and where the honest limits are. It is general information, not a treatment recommendation.
What causes skin to lose firmness?
Firm skin depends on two proteins in the dermis. Collagen provides structure and density. Elastin lets skin stretch and spring back. Both are produced steadily when we are young, and both decline from our twenties onward as production slows and breakdown speeds up.
In Queensland the bigger factor is usually sun. Ultraviolet exposure degrades collagen and elastin directly, which is why sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck and chest show laxity earlier and more visibly than skin that has been covered. Genetics, smoking, significant weight change and hormonal shifts all contribute as well.
Is it laxity, or is it lost volume?
These look similar in the mirror and respond to completely different treatments, so it is the first thing worth separating.
- Laxity is a skin-quality problem. The skin itself has less structure and spring, so it drapes rather than holds. Pinch it gently and it is slow to retract.
- Volume loss is a support problem. The fat pads and structures beneath the skin have shrunk, so there is less underneath holding it up. The skin may be perfectly healthy.
Most people over forty have some of both, and the mix determines the plan. Our guide to facial volume loss after weight loss covers the volume side in more detail, since rapid weight loss is one of the clearest cases of the two happening together.
What treatments improve skin laxity?
Radiofrequency skin tightening
Diamond Polar radiofrequency delivers gentle, controlled heat into the dermis. Heat does two things: it causes existing collagen fibres to contract, which gives a modest immediate effect, and it triggers a wound-healing response that lays down new collagen over the following weeks. It is comfortable, has no downtime, and suits the cheeks, jaw and neck. It works best as a planned series rather than a single session.
Skin needling
Skin needling creates controlled micro-channels that prompt the skin to produce its own new collagen. Where radiofrequency works with heat, needling works through a precise, controlled injury. It suits firmness alongside texture, and is often the better choice when scarring or surface irregularity are part of the picture.
Regenerative support
Rejuran supports the skin's own repair processes and elasticity rather than forcing a response. It is often used alongside the treatments above, particularly on thinner, more fragile skin such as the under-eye area and the neck, where aggressive treatment is not appropriate. Our comparison of Rejuran, skin needling and skin boosters explains how they differ.
Combination plans
Because these work through different mechanisms, they complement each other. Tribella and Bibella combine tightening, resurfacing and rejuvenation into a single considered plan, and bio-stimulating treatments add another collagen-building route where appropriate.
What can treatment realistically achieve?
Meaningful improvement in skin firmness, texture and quality is a reasonable goal, and for mild to moderate laxity the change can be genuinely satisfying. What these treatments do not do is lift significantly descended tissue. If the concern is well beyond skin quality, the honest answer is that no energy device or injectable will match what a surgical procedure achieves, and you should be told that plainly rather than sold a course that will disappoint.
That conversation is part of a proper consultation. A clinic that assesses your skin and tells you what is and is not achievable is more useful than one that says yes to everything.
How long does it take?
Collagen remodelling is slow. New collagen continues forming for months after a treatment, so a firmness plan is measured in months rather than weeks. Most people work to a course spaced several weeks apart, with the fullest result some months after the final session, then maintenance to hold it.
Getting your skin assessed
Niche Aesthetics is a registered nurse-led clinic in Worongary, a short drive from Robina, Mudgeeraba, Bundall and Mermaid Waters. Every firmness plan starts with separating laxity from volume, so the treatment matches the actual problem.
