Rejuran vs skin needling vs skin boosters: which one do you actually need?

By Monique, Registered Nurse · · 6 min read

In short

Skin needling stimulates the skin to build its own collagen through controlled micro-injury, and suits texture, firmness and acne scarring. Rejuran is a regenerative treatment using polynucleotides that supports the skin's repair processes, hydration and elasticity. Skin boosters primarily hydrate by delivering hyaluronic acid into the skin. They work differently, and are often planned together rather than chosen between.

Rejuran, skin needling and skin boosters get talked about as if they are three versions of the same thing. They are not. They act on the skin through genuinely different mechanisms, which is why the right answer for one person's skin is the wrong answer for another's, and why they are frequently used together rather than instead of each other.

Here is the plain-English version of what each one does. It is general information, not a treatment recommendation.

Skin needling: making the skin do the work

Skin needling, or collagen induction therapy, uses fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. The skin reads that as an injury and responds by producing new collagen and elastin. Nothing is being added; the skin is being prompted to rebuild its own structure.

That makes it well suited to texture, firmness, enlarged-looking pores and acne scarring, where the problem is missing or disorganised collagen. It is planned as a course, usually three to six sessions several weeks apart, because collagen remodelling is gradual.

Rejuran: supporting the skin's repair processes

Rejuran is a regenerative treatment based on polynucleotides, repair molecules purified from salmon DNA. Rather than adding volume or forcing a healing response through injury, it supports the skin's own repair processes, hydration and elasticity from within.

It is used across the full face, the delicate under-eye area, the neck and for scarring. It tends to be the option considered when skin quality, resilience and elasticity are the concern, particularly in areas where thin, fragile skin makes more aggressive treatment unsuitable.

Skin boosters: hydration first

Skin boosters deliver hyaluronic acid into the skin to improve hydration, and with it, the way skin reflects light. They are not volumising in the way filler is, and they are not primarily collagen-stimulating in the way needling is. Their strength is dull, dehydrated, tired-looking skin. At Niche Aesthetics, hydration-focused options are discussed as part of a hydrating treatment plan or at consultation.

The short comparison

  • Mechanism. Needling stimulates through controlled micro-injury. Rejuran supports the skin's own repair biology. Boosters hydrate by adding hyaluronic acid.
  • Best suited to. Needling for texture, firmness and scarring. Rejuran for skin quality, elasticity and fragile areas such as the under-eye. Boosters for dehydration and dullness.
  • Timeline. Needling and Rejuran both build gradually over a course. Hydration changes tend to show sooner but need maintaining.
  • Downtime. Needling leaves skin pink for a day or two. Rejuran can leave small bumps or tenderness that settle within a day or two. All require aftercare.

Do I have to choose?

Often not. Because the three work through different mechanisms, they complement each other more than they compete. A plan might use needling to rebuild structure, Rejuran to support skin quality and resilience while that happens, and a hydration step to address dullness along the way. Combination protocols such as Bibella and Tribella exist for exactly this reason.

What matters is sequencing and suitability, and that is a clinical judgement rather than something to decide from a price list.

What none of them do

None of these treatments replace lost facial volume. If the concern is hollowness rather than skin quality, that is a different conversation and belongs in a private consultation. Our guide to facial volume loss after weight loss explains how the two are told apart.

How a plan is decided

At Niche Aesthetics every plan starts with a skin assessment with Monique, a registered nurse, at the Worongary clinic, a short drive from Robina, Mudgeeraba, Bundall and Mermaid Waters. You can also browse the full treatment menu.

This article is general information only and is not a treatment recommendation. Individual results vary. Suitability for any treatment is confirmed at a consultation with a registered nurse.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Rejuran and skin needling? +

Skin needling creates controlled micro-channels so the skin responds by producing its own new collagen, which suits texture, firmness and acne scarring. Rejuran is a regenerative treatment using polynucleotides that supports the skin's existing repair processes, hydration and elasticity. One prompts the skin to rebuild, the other supports how well it repairs.

Can you have Rejuran and skin needling together? +

They are often planned together rather than chosen between, because they work through different mechanisms and complement each other. Sequencing and suitability are clinical decisions made at a consultation with a registered nurse, based on your skin and your concern.

Are skin boosters the same as filler? +

No. Skin boosters deliver hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and improve how it looks and reflects light. They are not intended to add structural volume in the way dermal filler is. Volume is a separate conversation that belongs in a private consultation.

Which treatment is best for under-eye skin? +

The under-eye area has thin, fragile skin, so it is generally approached conservatively. Rejuran has an option developed specifically for this area, supporting skin quality and resilience rather than adding volume. Suitability is confirmed at your consultation.

How long do results from Rejuran or skin needling last? +

Both build gradually over a course of sessions and the improvement is to your own skin, so it is maintained rather than permanent. Most plans include maintenance sessions after the initial course. A realistic timeline is set out at your consultation.
